Maritzburg target consistency against Gallants

Maritzburg United are hoping for back-to-back wins, something of a rarity of late, when they host Marumo Gallants in the DStv Premiership Toda

United claimed a 1-0 win at Baroka FC last time out, welcome relief after a slow start to the season, and are now looking to win two games in succession for the first time since early April.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work in the background for the past two months, so getting that first win felt extremely rewarding,” assistant coach Maahier Davids told his club’s website. “It was important to build the confidence and to build some momentum going forward as well.

Hopefully we can use it as a steppingstone for the next games to come. I’ve seen their [Gallants’] games and analysed them. They’ve got really good individuals and can mix it up. We have to be prepared for a game, let’s say a bit of chaos.

“I think they thrive in that environment, but we have to stick to our game plan, stay calm and structured. If we play the same way we did in Polokwane, I’m sure we can get a positive result.”

The last few years have been a struggle for United, but Davids says with a relatively overhauled squad after a busy last transfer window, they need to look to a brighter future.

“We can’t look back, we have to look forward. Next is a home game where we have to try and pick up points. Taking that confidence from the last game will be important.

“The first win would also have given the new players that taste of victory and for a guy like Richard Zumah, who scored his first goal in South Africa, and just in general the clean sheet.

“We worked hard on fixing what we didn’t do well. Yes, we got the result and were happy with the fight, but there are always things to improve on and those are the things we worked on for the past 11 days.”
