Chelsea will step up their pursuit in £75m-rated Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz after completing a deal for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, claims The Daily Mail.
Werner has agreed on a five-year deal worth £200,000-a-week with Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s side are on the brink of landing the Germany international for around £53m.
Chelsea plans to make Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell one of their next signings after Werner but now it has emerged they will rival Manchester United for Havertz.
The 20-year-old has been regarded as one of the best youngsters in Europe since breaking into the Leverkusen first-team set-up four years ago.
Havertz has been in career-best form since the turn of the year and impressively picked up from where he left off before quarantine when the Bundesliga returned last month.
United have already been heavily linked with a move for the versatile German attacker and was considered favorites before Chelsea’s interest.
With Real Madrid also monitoring Havertz’s future, it leaves United’s hopes of securing a cut-price deal in tatters.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was hoping to take advantage of the post-Coronavirus market and land Havertz for around £50m but Chelsea and Madrid’s interest will only drive up his price.
Havertz has remarkably played a direct hand in 13 goals in 12 league appearances in 2020, having only scored twice in 14 matches during the first half of the 2019/20 campaign.
