Liverpool have been taunted on Italian television with reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan being tipped to exploit Reds keeper Alisson and their other “weak points”.
Jurgen Klopp’s men travel to the San Siro on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, with the Reds looking to extend their winning streak over the Italians to three games.
Inter have been somewhat of a surprise package this season, overcoming the summer loss of star players Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi, as well as manager Antonio Conte, to become the pacesetters in Serie A.https://get-latest.convrse.media/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mirror.co.uk%2Fsport%2Ffootball%2Fnews%2Fliverpool-inter-milan-champions-league-26241633&cre=top&cip=4&view=web
Though they lost their place at the summit of the Italian top-flight to bitter rivals AC Milan over the weekend, Simone Inzaghi’s side are expected to be tough opponents for their Premier League opponents.
HAVE YOUR SAY! What is your score prediction for the Champions League clash between Liverpool and Inter Milan?
Liverpool are still expected to come through the knockout clash having gone on a nine-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.
But former England manager Fabio Capello believes that Klopp’s team does not look as strong as many claim.
Capello led AC Milan to the Champions League title in 1994 and has insisted that Inter can exploit Liverpool’s defence.
He highlighted the fact that Alisson has been named man of the match in recent games as a hint that the Reds are not as tough an opponent as they appear.
“The current Liverpool is not the same side it was a few months ago. Klopp said it was his strongest team? Well, he would say that, what do you expect him to say?” Capello told Sky Sport Italia. “The Liverpool goalkeeper has recently been Man of the Match in every game. That says a great deal about how they are defending.”
West Ham icon Paulo di Canio agreed with his compatriot and also believes that there are “weak points” in Liverpool’s team.
The Premier League legend also tipped Alisson to commit a “howler”, despite the Brazilian’s recent impressive form.
“Even then, Alisson performs heroics in goal, but every four or five games he has a bit of a howler. Liverpool have weak points, every team does,” Di Canio said.
Despite the confidence of the two pundits, Inzaghi has admitted that his Inter side will be underdogs against the Reds, with this being their first last 16 clash for a decade.
“I think that Liverpool are one of the greatest clubs in Europe. But I’m happy that my players deserve to play these kind of games against these very experienced teams,” the Inter boss said.
“We haven’t been playing in the last 16 for a long time. The first step was to get to that stage after 10 years. It will be hard but we will try to do our best.
“I believe Liverpool are the favourites but the matches have to be played. Liverpool have strong individual players but all games start 0-0.
“Liverpool are a team with great players in every position, a great manager and a great squad, a very intense style of play.”
